Scope of Work

Ambitious two-phase plan combined renovation, new construction and demolition to create ~137,000 sf of new research, teaching and instrumentation space within a 558,000 sq feet building complex. MD&B was involved in blasting rock for the foundation and site improvements of the new structure

The project occurred while University classes were in session.

All drilling & blasting was accomplished (on-schedule in 3 months).

Summary

All capital projects at Brandeis are designed and built to a LEED-Silver-equivalent or better standard. Building materials included cladding with recycled content, natural linoleum, recycled stone flooring, sustainable solid-surface material, urea-formaldehyde free wood products, low VOC paints, and carpet made with recycled fibers. Sustainability strategies included heat recovery with enthalpy wheel; high-performance glazing and sunshading; a green roof; a daylight harvesting system; and replacement of previously impervious paving with landscaping to reduce stormwater runoff.
