Scope of Work

Drilling & Blasting to allow the construction of a new athletic field in an urban setting with very little space. The subsequent ledge high walls were to be amended with dowels and drains to ensure public safety.

Challenges

Regulatory burdens in urban North Shore of Massachusetts coupled with the fact that the grade school was in session takes a good plan and careful timing. In this case, the blasting and excavation was to be completed ahead of a rock slope study. The prescription for the rock slope stabilization would come after the site was excavated, creating a risk to lose access if not planned carefully.

Outcome

With good communication, understanding the regulatory burdens, and using a combination of methods including line drilling, controlled blasting, rock dowels, the team was able to successfully complete the project on time and without incident. Minimal rework and fills for drill access where required to complete the dowels and drains prescribed. Using MD&B?s versatile drilling equipment fleet, experienced personnel, and seamless coordination with the geotechnical engineers, we completed the work at low cost and without delay for the owner and project team.
